Junior Leadership Durham (JLD) is a extensive program designed for high school sophomores to gain an in-depth education of the Durham Community. During the course of the eight month program students are engaged by transformational community leaders in order to assist them in the continued development of their leadership skills.

The students will actively engage with business, community, and government leaders to gain a broader knowledge and awarenss of the City of Durham. JLD students will be constantly challenged to explore ways in which they are able to contribute to the Durham Commuity.

It's exciting to see these students interact with successful leaders in their community - young and old, male and female, corporate and entrepreneurial. This valuable experience empowers them to find and nurture their own leadership. I am always amazed to see how self-assured and confident they have become.

Catherine Ascott, Class Coordinator

The entire JLD program is offered at no cost to participants due to the immense support from corporate and community benefactors who recognize the importance of developing young leaders for the community.

Students who participate in the entirety of the program will gain a fundamental understanding of the workings of Durham, and the important issues that effect them, their peers, and their families. They will also get the opportunity to develop friendships with students around the county who may come from different learning environments, socio-economic, ethnic, and philisophical backgrounds.
